Val McDermid sponsors football stand

A (probable) first as reported by Iain Collin in The Scotsman:

Fife-based football team Raith Rovers have renamed their north stand after concluding a unique sponsorship deal with best-selling crime writer Val McDermid.

The enclosure at the club, which counts Prime Minister Gordon Brown as a lifelong fan, will now be known as the McDermid Stand, with the author backing the club where her father, Jim, was a scout and signed the legendary Jim Baxter and Ian Porterfield.

McDermid said: "I'm delighted to mark the Rovers' promotion to the First Division with this sponsorship deal.

Burress Pleads Guilty

For those following the Plaxico Burress saga, Burress pleaded guilty this morning to one count of criminal possession of a weapon. Under his plea agreement, Burress will receive a two-year prison sentence, along with two years of post-release supervision. With good behavior, however, he will be eligible for parole after approximately 20 months in jail. Had Burress not reached a plea agreement, he was potentially facing up to 15 years in prison.

The plea agreement is still pending the approval of a state court judge, with sentencing set for September 22.

When Will This Stop? Brett Favre To Become A Viking This Afternoon

There's just nothing else to comment about Favre anymore, nothing ceases to amaze me with him. How selfish can one player be to just keep on quitting and coming back? The man loves all the attention on himself. There's not a waking moment where all eyes aren't on him.

I'd like to tip my cap to Nick Zambelli. On Saturday night Nick and I were discussing the whole Michael Vick situation and how much attention it'll grab for the rest of the season. Then Nick made the notion that maybe this was just all a ploy for Brett Favre to secretly come back into the NFL. At the time I laughed, but you know what at this point how could we not think that. Favre will continue to play until he's forced out of the league by injury because at this rate any team that needs someone behind center will give him a shot. As long as Favre doesn't have to show up at training camp for a month and he definitely on board.

There's just too many story lines this season in NFL. We thought Michael Vick would grab headlines. Now the first Viking/Packer game will be the center of attention. Just like Brett Favre wanted it.

Brett Favre Will NOT Play For The Vikings, Remains Retired

All I can say is thank goodness. I like Brett Favre and all, as a person. But, enough is enough and his decision to opt out of playing for the Minnesota Vikings was the right one. (In my opinion.) This decision didn’t come easy today (July 28th) for the legendary quarterback,

“It was the hardest decision I’ve ever made,” Favre said. “I didn’t feel like physically I could play at a level that was acceptable. I would like to thank everyone, including the Packers, Jets and Vikings â€" but, most importantly, the fans.”

“I had to be careful not to commit for the wrong reasons,” Favre said. “They were telling me, ‘You went through all this, you had the surgery and you’ve got to finish it off.’ But I have legitimate reasons for my decision. I’m 39 with a lot of sacks to my name.”

Makes sense to me. I congratulate Brett on a remarkable career. I think he will live on in the game forever. Good luck in the next chapter of your life, Favre. You did good.

Jim Johnson Philadelphia Eagles Defensive Coordinator Dead Of Cancer

Philadelphia Eagles former defensive coordinator Jim Johnson has died at the age of 68 after a 6-month bout with cancer.

He overcame melanoma in 2001, but later developed a metastasized tumor on his spine.

A statement from the Eagles said:

A veteran of 22 years as an NFL assistant, Johnson is regarded as one of the top defensive masterminds in National Football League history. Over the last decade, he gained a great deal of notoriety as the orchestrator of the renowned Eagles defense. His aggressive style kept Philadelphia at or near the top of the NFL in nearly every major defensive category since joining Andy Reid’s staff on January 22, 1999.
